Working of solar power plant
Typically, the working of a solar power plant comprises a bank of solar panels receiving sun’s energy which is converted into DC electric power by photovoltaic (PV) effect produced by the PV cells in the panels. This DC electric power is fed to a battery which stores the energy. This DC power is converted to AC power by means of an inverter and the AC output of the inverter feeds the mains from where various applications draw electric power.
Commercial Grid-tied, on-grid, utility-interactive, grid interactive and grid backfeeding are all terms used to describe the same concept - a solar system that is connected to the utility power grid.

1. Save more money with Net-metering / Gross-metering

A grid-connection will allow you to save more money with solar panels through better efficiency rates, net / gross metering, plus lower equipment and installation costs:

Batteries, and other stand-alone equipment, are required for a fully functional off-grid solar system and add to costs as well as maintenance. Grid-tied solar systems are therefore generally cheaper and simpler to install.

Your solar panels will often generate more electricity than what you are capable of consuming. With net metering, system owners can infuse this excess electricity back onto the utility grid instead of storing it themselves with batteries.

Net metering (or feed-in tariff schemes in some states) play an important role in how solar power is incentivized. With it, such solar systems become much more feasible from a financial / commercial point of view.

Solar energy is a renewable source of energy that is gaining ground because of the benefits it offers. Most homes have a roof or a backyard which can be utilized to install solar panels and produce electricity.
Features of a home solar system 
A home solar system must provide enough electric energy to fulfil all the power requirements of a home. It should also be capable of providing AC power as traditionally all homes use AC power to operate lighting systems, gadgets, appliances and equipment such as computers, refrigerators, mixers, fans, air conditioners, TVs and music systems.
Factors to consider
The factors to consider before setting up a home solar power plant are as follows:

  • The AC power required in the home is to be ascertained. The best way to ascertain this is to use the highest monthly electricity bill in the past year. The bill records the number of units of electricity consumed in that month. Dividing the units by the number of days in the month will give the daily consumption.     • The number of solar panels needed to generate the required AC power is to be calculated. In the above example, the home requires 15 units per day which is equivalent to 15 kWh. This means that in 1 hour the solar panel must generate 15000 watts of power. Thus, if a panel can produce 3 kWh per day of 10 hours then 5 solar panels would be required to produce 15 kWh.

      Solar home systems (SHS) are stand-alone photovoltaic systems that offer a cost-effective mode of supplying amenity power for lighting and appliances to remote off-grid households. In rural areas, that are not connected to the grid, SHS can be used to meet a household's energy demand fulfilling basic electric needs. Globally SHS provide power to hundreds of thousands of households in remote locations where electrification by the grid is not feasible[1]. SHS usually operate at a rated voltage of 12 V direct current (DC) and provide power for low power DC appliances such as lights, radios and small TVs for about three to five hours a day. Furthermore they use appliances such as cables, switches, mounts, and structural parts and power conditioners / inverters, which change 12/ 24 V power to 240VAC power for larger appliances[1]. SHS are best used with efficient appliances so as to limit the size of the array.

      A SHS typically includes one or more PV modules consisting of solar cells, a charge controller which distributes power and protects the batteries and appliances from damage and at least one battery to store energy for use when the sun is not shining.

      They contribute to the improvement of the standard of living by:

      • reducing indoor air pollution and therefore improving health as they replace kerosene lamps,
      • providing lighting for home study,
      • giving the possibility of working at night and
      • facilitating the access to information and communication (radio, TV, mobile phone charging).

       

      Stand-alone photovoltaic systems can also be used to provide electricity for health stations to operate lamps during night and a refrigerator for vaccines and medicines to better serve the community.

Ground mount solar panels are a solar solution that can be easily implemented in a large yard or field. The panels are similar to pole-mounted solar panels, but instead of being elevated on poles, they are installed directly on the ground.
